Tarrazú Jaguar Coffees | Coffee With a Purpose
With more than twenty five percent of its land marked as protected under strong conservation regulations, Costa Rica is unique among its neighboring Central American countries. In addition, four percent of all species on Earth call Costa Rica’s lush landscape home. Costa Rica’s environmentalism is certainly admirable, but human intervention has disrupted the eco-system. Coffee is also in retreat. The amount of coffee farmland has declined in recent decades and many animal habitats have disappeared.
Since 2010, Genuine Origin’s sister company in Costa Rica, Café Capris, has been supporting Costa Rica’s jaguar population through FUNDAZOO. Jaguars are an important, but endangered species in the ecosystem. They are what conservationists call an ‘umbrella species’, meaning their conservation ensures the protection of many other species. Jaguars need a lot of space to live and migrate across Central and South America. Migration is the source of their reproduction. Due to human-made developments, the migration routes of jaguars have been severely disrupted. In addition, illegal hunting and deforestation have accelerated the reduction of the jaguar population in Costa Rica. Since the start of the project, Jaguar coffees have helped raise over $40,000 for FUNDAZOO.
Genuine Origin has imported Tarrazú Jaguar Honey from Cafe Capris since it opened in 2016. As the name suggests, Tarrazú Jaguar Honey is a honey-processed coffee from Tarrazú, Costa Rica’s coffee nursery. The coffee is produced at Beneficio San Diego Mill, one of Genuine Origin’s sister companies and one of the most innovative coffee mills in Costa Rica. First and foremost though, Jaguar Honey is a coffee with an environmental purpose: for every quintal (roughly 100lbs) of Jaguar Honey sold, $1 is donated to Fundación Pro Zoológicos, (FUNDAZOO).
Based in Costa Rica, Fundazoo is a conservation nonprofit foundation that protects and promotes the natural biodiversity of Costa Rica. Responsible for several zoos and national parks in the country, Fundazoo bases its work on three pillars: research, habitat management and education. Very active in the global scene, Fundazoo works hand in hand with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Tarrazú Jaguar Honey is also an environmental leader. In comparison with other coffee processes, honey processing is far less water intensive. Due to a shorter fermentation period, the coffee acquires an acidity halfway between natural and washed coffees. Farmers produce coffees with some of the unique characteristics of natural processed coffee in less time and with lower risks of unexpected effects, such as over-fermentation. In the honey process, the cherry skin is completely removed and only the mucilage is left on the parchment. A honey coffee bean has a lighter, yellower honey color.
Genuine Origin is celebrating four years of Costa Rica Tarrazú Jaguar Honey. In addition to the funding provided by Café Capris, Genuine Origin is earmarking a portion of the sale of Jaguar Honey to support Jaguars. This year, Genuine Origin roasters can opt to pay an extra $.10 to support Costa Rica’s jaguar population. Once the lot sells out, Genuine Origin will donate the premium to FUNDAZOO.
As a bonus Genuine Origin also contracted @ninabotanica, a Costa Rican designer to produce the Jaguar Honey logo. Genuine Origin was inspired to reach out to @ninabotanica because of the creative work she did for Cuento Coffee, a Genuine Origin customer whose bags always feature new artists.
